F.A.Q.

I’m visiting Japan and I want to practice can I just turn up at any Dojo?

The truth is, unless you’re specifically invited, it isn’t really accepted to come and practice at a dojo. If you would like to be invited, you need to form a relationship with someone at the dojo, or someone who knows someone.

I’m visiting Japan and I want to practice at your dojo, can I come?

This is a tough one...

If you would like to attend practice at a dojo where I can introduce you, please let me know the following information.

1. Your grade
2. How often you practice
3. What level of practice do you do? beginner, once a week, serious competitor/national team member etc.
4. When you will be coming to Japan, and how often you would like to practice.

Be warned, some people have emailed me and gotten no reply for being down. right. rude... Ask politely.
Also, don't be offended if I say I can't help because,

a. I don't often go to practice where a complete beginner would be able to receive 1 on 1 teaching. So me or someone else would have to take care of you. (sorry...)
b. Its my reputation on the line if you come and tsuki a 7th dan out the window!

What are the best kendo equipment?
There is a range of different bogu with prices for a complete set ranging from $250 for  entry level equipment  to well over $10,000 for top of the range hand made equipment.

There are as many suppliers operating on line and in smaller local shops here in Japan. Check out my equipment reviews page and kendo stores page for more info.

Do you have any advice for kendo overall?

Relax.

Do lots of Kihon. Once you can kiai, step in sharply and cut men with a large smooth motion, and can manage to achieve Ki-Ken-Tai no ichi, followed by accelerating past your opponent and finishing with proper zanshin, you can do anything!

Always practice like it is the last time you will ever do so. Waste no time, give everything, always.

I’m coming to Japan for a visit, where’s the best place to stay/eat/shop?

I'll try to ad some more information here. But google should help where I can't!
